Lynden Hillclimb-Judson Alley Design Study
Lynden Judson Alley Property Owners, Lynden, Washington

We developed illustrative site plans, design guidelines, and project feasibility studies for the redevelopment of an historic fire station/city hall building, Judson Street/Alleyway, and riverfront hillclimb for mixed use retail, public, and residential activities for the Judson Street/Kok Road Property Owners.

A previous cooperative planning effort with 25 property owners created an overall strategy for developing the underutilized and vacant land parcels located behind the historic downtown Dutch village style commercial district. The owners selected a design/development strategy that incorporated a neo-traditional village planning approach to street and pedestrian areas combined with contemporary Dutch design concepts for "woonerf" parking/pedestrian area courtyards and park/open space configurations.

We created these additional design studies for the reuse of the fire station/city hall for a coffee house, brewery and party facility, public meeting room, and Chamber of Commerce offices. The design schemes also created concepts for reusing the adjacent parking lot and alleyway as a pedestrian space accessing the rear properties for mixed-use development.

The property owners used the studies to initiate discussions with the city for the reuse of the original city hall/fire station and the construction of the Kok Road bypass project.
