We
recently conducted a diary-based survey of the detailed recreational behaviors
of 1,200 households throughout the state for the Washington State Interagency
Committee for Outdoor Recreation (IAC).
The
IAC needed to update the previous diary-based surveys they had conducted for the
Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plans (SCORP) in the 1980s and 1990s.
In addition, the IAC wanted to expand the list of activities to include a more
comprehensive list including wildlife, indoor, and recent extreme sports.
We
previously created a participation based model for projecting park and
recreational demands and facility requirements for the Columbia River Gorge
Commission and for the Corporation of Delta, British Columbia, Canada using the
results of earlier IAC surveys.
Our
updated survey and model projected potential park activity volumes using the
household behavioral data generated for the IAC surveys - and corresponding
facility requirements using a unit carrying capacity methodology developed by
the National Park Service.
The
IAC used our updated survey information and participation-based model to project
future facility needs throughout the state and specific regions in the 2002
SCORP documents.
