Our public design process involved downtown property owners, merchants,
summer festival organizers, market vendors, and the general public on
issues and aspirations concerning the underutilized, transitional property
located between the Deschutes River and historic downtown Bend.
Our resulting design strategy created and implemented a joint venture public/private
redevelopment project to widen and improve the horizontal and vertical
alignment of a public passageway through a vacant storefront.
The alleyway
was converted into a pedestrian boardwalk with an adjacent
special events plaza and overlook viewing Mirror Pond and Mount Bachelor. Rear
entrances, balconies, terraces, and patios were created in the back of the
commercial storefronts to take advantage of the views, market vendors, and
other special event activities.
